Community Eye test Project Continues to Work Despite the war in Israel
We would like to share a very special story about Dr. Meir Yehezkel and the importance of awareness of the "Eye Exams in the Community" project of the "Lirot" association:
Recently, a woman contacted us, requesting an eye exam at home for her elderly mother, who is housebound and cannot get to an ophthalmologist at the health insurance company.
The mother had been complaining for a long time that she could not see in both eyes.
Due to advanced dementia, it was not possible to know to what extent the complaints reflected a real medical problem, but her children felt that something was wrong.

They began looking for a solution and through a Google search they discovered for the first time that the "Lirot" association offers an eye exam service at home.

In an examination carried out in recent days, significant findings were found:
  • Very high intraocular pressure, which had apparently existed for a long time without anyone knowing about it.
  • Severe and irreversible damage to the optic nerve in both eyes, as a result of the prolonged pressure.
  • Very advanced cataracts in both eyes, requiring Surgery.

These findings finally explained the mother's complaints.
The ophthalmologist recommended immediate treatment with drops to lower intraocular pressure, to preserve the remaining vision that can still be saved, and also urgently referred for further treatment and cataract surgery through the health insurance fund.
Although the damage already caused to the optic nerve cannot be reversed – but timely diagnosis makes it possible to stop the deterioration, preserve what is left and improve visual acuity as much as possible after cataract surgery.

It is hard not to think about what would have happened if the family had not discovered the existence of this service by chance.
The home eye exam service is designed for exactly such situations – for people who are confined to their homes and cannot get to the clinic for an exam.
Awareness of its existence can make all the difference.

Continuing Our Work During War
Israel is currently facing an ongoing war, with frequent sirens, missile attacks, and constant uncertainty. Sleep is disrupted, daily routines are challenged, and planning ahead feels nearly impossible.

And yet — the need for care has not stopped. People still need support, guidance, and access to essential eye health services.

We continue to make this possible through our website, which offers extensive information, online consultations with expert doctors, and the ongoing planning of a major conference marking 20 years of our organization.
Your support helps us keep going, especially in times like these. We would be deeply grateful for your donation.
