Sometimes there are good and joyful surprises in academic life, for example, when an article is accepted for publication, when a research proposal is funded, or when an award is won. All of these accomplishments require scientific excellence that begins with our ability to think, imagine, and pose new hypotheses. As researchers, we must dare to envision new frontiers for ourselves that we will reach through fruitful and dedicated research. As you will see below, in recent months, the Institute's researchers have attained great achievements in teaching and research. I would especially like to note the funding of three important new research centers. The first is the Israeli Center for Digital Agriculture, which is the product of a collaboration between three FAAB researchers (Naftali, Shimon, and Tarin) and researchers from other institutes and universities. This research center will construct advanced plant phenotyping infrastructures that all FAAB researchers will be able to use. The second is a collaboration between Nurit and Arnon from our institute and other researchers (see details below). The core of the project will take place at the Mashash Experimental Site located near the Negev Junction. At this experimental farm, research infrastructures will be built that continuously measure climatic conditions in the desert (water, radiation, gases). The third center, led by Aaron, is the Omics Laboratory. This collaborative research center will allow for an integrated examination of the metabolic, genetic, and chemical profiles of various organisms. Again, all these projects entail fantastic opportunities for all FAAB researchers to engage in cooperative efforts. I suggest speaking with the project leaders to think about ways to develop fruitful collaborations. We are all always looking for new funding opportunities, and sometimes, we discover the option too late. A very interesting tool that I recently came across is Pivot! Pivot is a comprehensive database of global funding opportunities, which is now available to all BGU researchers! After creating a profile, you can start exploring funding opportunities tailored to your research interests. You can receive support from the university’s RDA on how to use the new system, and I encourage you to take full advantage of this tool. Given the expected decline in research support from government sources, I think it is worth examining global funding sources. The field of sustainable food security is gaining momentum, so there are many available grants in the research areas of our faculty members.
