Converting Wor(l)ds
International Conference

18th -21st May 2015

An International Conference by The Center for the Study of Conversion & Inter-Religious Encounters in Cooperation with Israeli Centers of Research Excellence, Israeli Science Foundation and Council for Higher Education.

18th -21st May 2015, Barkan Hall, Zlotowski Student Center and Zlotowski Student Administration Building, BGU Marcus Family Campus, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva.

The planned workshop will focus on texts that are pertinent to religious conversion between the three Abrahamic religions in the Middle Ages and the early- Modern period.

We wish to  encourage the prospective participants to bring to the workshop a text  (both published and unpublished) that they believe is central and important to the issue of religious conversion.

As we wish to broaden our scope we encourage texts from all literary genres (exegetical, liturgical legal, historiographical, poetic etc.).

The workshop will revolve around the texts (in any source language but translated into English either in a viable existing translation or by the presenter).

The suggested format, in a two hour session, is that the text will be presented by the scholar, who will elaborate on his / her insights (up to 45 mins) and then, two respondents will comment on the text from their perspective (10-20 mins.). The text will be sent in advance to the respondents with a short introduction (one page max!).

All texts will be included in a booklet that we will produce for this workshop.

This will be followed by opening the floor to general discussion by all the workshop participants.

We envision that the texts presented at the workshop will serve as the core textual fabric of a course reader on the various aspects of religious conversion.

The CSOC is planning on publishing these texts as part of an international graduate-students course pack.
